The Gurkha khukuris on display were donated by our officers from the Gurkha Contingent to SPOM. The khukuri is the famed knife carried by Gurkhas. To many, it is essentially the symbol of the Gurkhas.
Every Gurkha has at least two khukuris: one for ceremonial
purposes, and one for daily use. The khukuri comes with two small knives; a
sharp one for slicing and a blunt one for sharpening the main blade. The maintenance
of the khukuri is an important part of a Gurkha officer’s routine and it is
kept sharp and clean at all times. This reflects the Gurkha officers’ belief
that they should keep themselves as sharp and smart as his khukuri.
